Crystal"Shines"
October 2009
Our own Crystal Welty was just named the Outstanding Toastmaster of the Year in the Paiute Division which is made up of 36 clubs in the Phoenix metro area. She was recognized for her outstanding voluntary service, including her help with fundraising activities for the Division. Club members like Crystal that volunteer their services are the life blood of the organization. Without the dedication of people like Crystal, there would be no opportunity for people to take advantage of the self improvement programs that Toastmasters offers.
Congratulations and Thank You.....Crystal!
Area P1 Fall 2009 Speech Contest
Diana Deming (2nd from the left) represented the club in the Area P1 Fall 2009 Humorous Speech contest with her funny stories about her trip to Italy. They were all still laughing at their stories when they got their certificates.
Vasanti Deshpande (2nd from the right) represented the club and won first place in the Area P1 Fall 2009 Evaluation contest.

Celebrating 20 Years
Palm Lane Toastmasters celebrated its 20th Anniversary at the club meeting and luncheon on June 10, 2008. Guest speakers included, from left to right, Pat Cunningham (ADEQ Assistant Director), Sam Rogers and Martha Seaman (former club members). Crystal Welty-far right (club president and Area Governor) presented the speakers with certificates of appreciation. The speakers talked to a large group about how Toastmasters has benefited them publicly as representatives of ADEQ and personaly in their private lives.
The Palm Lane Toastmasters Club was founded 20 years ago soon after the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality became a State agency. The agency has since moved locations, but at that time the club was called Palm Lane Toastmasters because the agency was located on Palm Lane at Central Avenue. The name was just too popular to give up.
Toastmasters International
In October 1924, a group of men assembled by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley met in the basement of the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, U.S.A., forming a club to afford practice and training in the art of public speaking and in presiding over meetings, and to promote sociability and good fellowship among its members. The group took the name
Toastmasters. We are a local chapter of
Toastmasters International.
Today, Toastmasters International is a non-profit organization which gives its members the opportunity to develop and improve their public speaking abilities through local club meetings, training seminars and speech contests. Toastmasters International includes more than 199,000 men and women in more than 9,300 clubs in more than 70 countries.
Experienced professionals and beginning speakers alike can benefit from our practical, face-to-face learning program. Whether you're speaking to the board of directors, your customers, your co-workers or your kids, Toastmasters can help you do it better. You'll learn and practice in a friendly, comfortable environment with people who are there for the same reason you areto become better communicators.
At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. A typical Toastmasters club is made up of 20 to 30 people who meet once a week for about an hour. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice conducting meetings, giving impromptu speeches, presenting prepared speeches, and offering constructive evaluation.
